HotSummer
The app that turns heat into action — by Survival-apps
Heat alerts already exist, in abundance: bulletins, municipal ordinances, red alerts. The problem isn't the information, it's that it stays too generic to be useful — “red alert today” doesn't tell someone who works outdoors whether they can finish a job at 2 pm, doesn't say how much water to carry, doesn't say when to check that an elderly relative is okay. HotSummer takes those same data (feels-like temperature, humidity) and turns them into instructions for the next hour, tuned to you.
- PERSONALIZED RISK INDEX — not just air temperature, but the feels-like temperature sorted into 4 levels (low/moderate/high/extreme). An optional profile (age, weight/height, outdoor activity, health conditions) lowers the alert thresholds if you're more vulnerable to heat.
- UV INDEX AND AIR QUALITY — in the same glance, on top of temperature and humidity: the UV index (WHO scale) to know how much you need sun protection, and air quality (European AQI) to tell whether being outdoors today is a good idea for your lungs too, not just for the heat.
- RECOMMENDED TIME WINDOW — “you can stay out until HH:MM”, not a generic bulletin you have to interpret.
- ADAPTIVE HYDRATION REMINDERS — the interval tightens as the risk climbs, not a fixed timer that's the same for everyone.
- LEVEL-JUMP ALERT — when the risk gets worse, a three-stage warning goes off: a notification, a three-tone chirp, and an amber Pip-Boy-style pop-up with the precautions for the hour. It fires only on the way up, never on first launch.
- NEAREST GREEN SPACE — the closest park, wood or nature reserve (name, distance, compass-oriented arrow), with one tap to get guided there by Google Maps.
- THREE WAYS TO PICK THE PLACE — current GPS position, search by name, or a point picked by hand on a built-in Leaflet map — handy for a place you'll be working tomorrow, or where a relative lives.
- PRACTICAL REMEDIES — always one tap away: signs of heatstroke, what to do right away, how to cool down in strong heat that isn't yet an emergency, when to call emergency services (112 in the EU, 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia, 111 in New Zealand).
- BILINGUAL ITALIAN / ENGLISH — interface, remedies and alerts in Italian and English, with a language switch in the app settings.
- NO ACCOUNT — no ads, no data leaves your phone except the weather/map requests the app needs to work (Open-Meteo and OpenStreetMap, both with no API key and no tracking).
Read this before using it
HotSummer is not a substitute for medical advice or official bulletins — it complements them, tailoring them to your situation. The risk index thresholds are first approximations, not clinical data. The risk index and the level-jump alert are recalculated only when you open the app or pull to refresh, not on their own while the app is closed: for a reliable risk alert, check the app when you're out. Hydration reminders that are already scheduled, on the other hand, arrive even with the app closed, through the end of the day — the next day they're rescheduled by reopening the app.
