Two phones running the EcoSurvivor app next to the shield emblem with the dollar sign: on screen, the Bunker dashboard with total reserves and the yearly chart, and the ration plan
The «Bunker» dashboard: reserves, survival index, yearly trend.

EcoSurvivor is a personal finance manager that treats your budget like the supplies in a bunker: income and expenses become reserves, category budgets become rations, and a survival index tells you with a single number how long you'd last at your current pace. Under the narrative skin, the job is the same as it has always been: write down where your money goes until you actually start to see it. It's not a new idea — it's over a century old.

The ancestor: Japanese kakebo

In 1904, Hani Motoko — the first woman to work as a journalist in Japan — published a household accounting method designed for the families of her country: the kakebo (家計種, kakeibo), literally the «household ledger». It wasn't a technical invention: it was a discipline. A notebook, a pen, half an hour at the start of the month to set your income and a savings goal, and a daily record of every expense, split into four categories — needs (food, home, transport), culture and personal growth, leisure and extras, and the unexpected. At the end of the month, a written reflection: what went well, what to change.

The principle behind kakebo is almost philosophical before it's financial: writing by hand slows you down, and slowing down forces you to look. It isn't the math of saving that does the work on its own — it's the awareness that comes from putting it down in writing, with your own hands, where every yen you spend goes. More than a century later, the method is still taught and practiced, even outside Japan, precisely because that discipline of attention has never gone out of style.

Field note EcoSurvivor isn't a digitized kakebo in the strict sense — it doesn't force you to write by hand, and its calculations are automatic and instant, not monthly. But it inherits the same underlying principle: make the flow of money visible, category by category, so you're forced to look at it. Where kakebo uses the slowness of paper, EcoSurvivor uses the gamification of the bunker — an index that rises or falls in real time, instead of a written reflection at the end of the month.

How it works

EcoSurvivor's Ration Plan screen: total monthly budget card and the list of rations by category with progress bars
The rations: a spending cap for each category — the same logic as kakebo's four categories.
