# Your phone already knows how to call for help: turn these features on

The Weaver — what I switched on

Fig. 1 — the screen almost nobody has ever seen light up, until it's really needed

A contact wrote to me late the other night: "I'm back, all good". Before that message, ten minutes of silence weigh more than they should. I opened my phone to check whether I at least had their location shared. I didn't. The feature was there, free, for years. I had never switched it on.

## The problem isn't finding an app

Anyone looking for personal safety on the store finds hundreds of apps, almost all with the same trick: they ask for huge permissions to do things your phone already does by itself, for free, without installing anything. It's not about trusting them or not — it's that the problem "someone needs to know where I am, and fast" is already solved by the operating system in your pocket. It's just turned off. Here's where to switch it on, on Android and on iPhone.

## On Android: Emergency SOS

The exact path changes slightly between Samsung, Pixel and other brands, but the feature is almost always in the same place: **Settings → Safety and privacy → Emergency SOS** (on some phones it's called "Emergency assistance" or "SOS emergency"). From there:

- **TURN ON THE GESTURE** — usually 5 quick presses of the power button. The phone sounds a countdown before acting, precisely to avoid false alarms in your pocket
- **CHOOSE WHAT HAPPENS** — you can trigger a call to the emergency number, send a message with your location to contacts you choose, or both
- **ADD AT LEAST ONE REAL CONTACT** — without an emergency contact set up, the "alert someone" part has nobody to write to

## On iPhone: Emergency SOS

In **Settings → Emergency SOS** you'll find two ways to trigger it: hold the side button and one of the volume buttons together, or — if you turn on the "Call with Press" option — press the side button 5 times. Here too a countdown starts before the call.

- **SHARE YOUR LOCATION IN AN EMERGENCY** — turn it on in the same screen: when SOS goes off, your location is automatically sent to your emergency contacts, and kept updated for a while even after the call
- **EMERGENCY CONTACTS IN HEALTH** — from Health → your profile → Emergency Contacts: they're visible even from the locked phone, to anyone who comes to help you

## Letting people know where you are, without waiting for an emergency

Most real-life cases aren't "I'm about to pass out", they're "I'm walking home alone and I want someone to know". For that you don't need any extra app:

- **GOOGLE MAPS** — profile picture top right → Location sharing → pick the contact and how long (even "until you turn this off"). It works even if the recipient doesn't have Google Maps open: they get a link
- **APPLE - FIND MY / MESSAGES** — from a message, tap your name at the top → Share My Location, or use the Find My app for permanent sharing with family

Zone note The SOS gesture (5 quick presses) sometimes goes off by mistake inside a bag or a tight pocket. It's not a flaw to disable: it's a good reason to try it once, at a calm moment, so you know exactly what happens — the sound, the countdown, who gets alerted — instead of finding out at the wrong time.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Emergency SOS work without an active SIM or credit?**
Yes for the call to the emergency number: in Europe it's a legal requirement that it works anyway. Sharing your location with your personal contacts, though, needs the phone to be able to send an SMS or use mobile data — that doesn't go through the emergency number.

**Does GPS work without an internet connection?**
The phone can work out its own position via satellite even offline, but to get it to someone else you still need a connection (SMS or data) at that moment.

**So there's no point installing a dedicated safety app?**
There is, if you need something these basic features don't do: continuous real-time tracking on a map shared with several people, a silent alarm with no audible countdown, or integration with a private security service. But by then you already know what you're comparing it against.

The construct doesn't send “I've arrived” messages. I do, whenever I choose — I know how. And from now on, so do you. May your code survive the apocalypse.

Note for readers outside Italy — emergency numbers The menu names above follow Italian phone settings, and the emergency number changes by country: **112** across the EU, **911** in the USA and Canada, **999** in the UK, **000** in Australia, **111** in New Zealand. Many phones let you dial 112 abroad and route it to the local service. Check which number your phone's SOS feature actually calls — in Settings it is usually set automatically from your region, but verify it once.
